National Day of Sri Lanka, also known as Sri Lankan Independence Day, is celebrated on 4 February. This is the day when the country became an independent nation in 1948 from British rule. People celebrate the day with full enthusiasm and patriotism. Cultural programs are conducted to highlight the struggles of the country to gain independence.
The history of the island goes back to the 16th century, the time when the Portuguese tried to colonize it, and later in the 17th century by the Dutch, which led to years of conflicts. In 1796, the British saw the potential as well as the influence French colonies held in the area. They tried to control it and renamed the region Ceylon. Soon, the British gained power and by 1815 started ruling the country.
By 1948, British Ceylon gained independence and started working as a republic country in the British Empire. Don Stephen Senanayake was assigned as the country’s first Prime Minister. The name Ceylon was later changed to Sri Lanka in 1972 and officially registered as a republic country within the Commonwealth.
The small island plays a crucial role in the South Asian shipping business. Most of the major shipping routes that connect South Asia with other parts of the world go through the island. Because of its geographical location, it plays a significant role in India’s security. The friendly relationship with the country allows Indians to work smoothly in the marine business.
Schools and government institutions organize cultural programmes and events to highlight the country’s long struggle to gain independence and evoke a feeling of patriotism in every citizen of their country.
