New York City Mayor Eric Adams files lawsuit against social media platforms

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, New York City Corporation Counsel Sylvia O. Hinds Radix, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan, NYC Health + Hospitals (NYC H+H) President Dr. Michell Katz, and New York City Department of Education (DOE) Chancellor David C. Banks together have slapped a Lawsuit on social media platforms which includes TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and YouTube for causing mental health crisis in youths across the U.S.

The last few years a debate has been raging about how Tech media platforms are increasingly employing tactics so that the youth spend most of their time on social media platforms.

The lawsuit indicts the social media platforms for making the youth addicted and also precipitating severe mental health issues.

The lawsuit states that millions of dollars are being spent for counseling and other measures to tackle increasing mental issues in the youth.

The lawsuit also asked authorities to force the social media platforms to limit their use by youths and also to make the minimum age limit to use such apps.

The lawsuit also intends to hold the social media platforms more accountable and also increase awareness about the long-term impacts of social media on youth.

Last month Health Commissioner’s Advisory was released by DOHMH Commissioner Dr. Vasan which categorized the excessive use of social media platforms as a hazardous act just like the advisories which are issued by the U.S. surgeons general for tobacco and firearms.

The advisory also recommended that participation in social media must not be allowed for kids below 14 years of age.

Mayor Eric Adams stated that the unfettered access to social media platforms is causing addiction and social disharmony.

Social media platforms are endangering the mental health of youths, promoting addiction and unsafe behavior.

According to Eric Adams, the lawsuit is the first bold attempt to make these social media platforms accountable for the metal health issues in the youth.

The lawsuit filed by Eric Adams also demand compensation for the money which the administration spends in tackling such mental issues in the youth.

Corporation Counsel Hinds-Radix stated that social media platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and Meta are choosing profits over the well being of kids by devising strategies which make the use of social media platforms addictive.

Special algorithms have been designed especially targeting school going kids and the youth so that they become addicted and spend a major portion of their time on such platforms.

The excessive use is making the kids couch potatoes and abstains from healthy sporting activities,
