UP man booked for triple talaq, demanding dowry

Lucknow, Feb 20 (IANS) – Mumtaz Ali, a 30-year-old man, has been booked by the Lucknow Police for allegedly pronouncing triple talaq to his wife, Maria Farooqui, and demanding dowry. Maria, 28, filed a complaint on Monday, accusing her husband of tricking her into signing the divorce paper. She also alleged that she was harassed and tortured by her husband, his mother, brothers, and sister for a dowry of Rs 5 lakh since her marriage in 2020.

According to Maria, her father gave adequate dowry to Mumtaz Ali at the time of their marriage, but they were not satisfied and wanted more money. In July last year, they took all her ornaments and expelled her from the house, demanding Rs 5 lakhs and even threatening to kill her. Three months later, Mumtaz and his family members agreed to reconcile, but instead took her to court and tricked her into signing on a stamp paper, as alleged by the victim.

SHO Hasanganj Raj Kumar stated that the matter is under investigation and further action would be taken soon.

The case has sparked outrage and brought attention once again to the issue of triple talaq and dowry demands in the country. The police are committed to thoroughly investigating the matter and taking appropriate action to ensure justice for Maria Farooqui. Triple talaq was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2019, but incidents of its practice continue to be reported, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and awareness.

The allegations made by Maria Farooqui are serious and should be thoroughly investigated. It is crucial for law enforcement to take a strong stance against practices like triple talaq and dowry demands to protect the rights and safety of women. The police have a responsibility to ensure that justice is served in this case and that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. We await further developments in the investigation and hope to see a swift and fair resolution for Maria Farooqui.
