Santosh Trophy 2024: Delhi miss penalty yet snatch a point from holders Karnataka

Karnataka began their National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy title defence with a 1-1 draw against Delhi. In an eventful match, P. Appu Arogya Swamy’s long-range stunner was canceled out by Prabin Tigga’s own goal. Delhi missed a chance to win in injury time with a missed penalty.

In the first half, both teams had opportunities to score. Karnataka’s early chances went wide, while Appu’s stunning long-range goal gave them the lead. However, Delhi quickly equalized through an own goal by Prabin Tigga.

Delhi started the second half stronger, but failed to create clear opportunities. In the latter stages, Karnataka piled on the pressure, keeping the Delhi goalkeeper busy. Delhi was later awarded a penalty in added time, but Sridarth Nongmeikapam’s shot was saved, ending the match in a draw.

In a rainy afternoon match, Manipur conceded a late equalizer to Railways, with Akash Babu tapping in the rebound after Rajesh S’s header hit the woodwork. Maharashtra emerged as the only team to secure a win, defeating Mizoram 3-1 with Advait, Lalhmunmawia, and Dipak Prakash Patil finding the net.

Overall, the first day of the National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy provided an action-packed display of football with some unexpected results.
