Shubhangi Atre’s Advice for Single Mothers on Combatting Patriarchy on Women’s Day

New Delhi, March 7 (IANS) – Shubhangi Atre, the acclaimed TV actress known for her role as Angoori Bhabhi in ‘Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain’, opened up about the challenges she faced as a single mother in a patriarchal society. Reflecting on her journey, she credited her fighting spirit to her parents and discussed the importance of ‘naari shakti’ on the eve of International Women’s Day.

Atre emphasized the influence of her father in instilling a sense of equality and strength in her and her sisters, stating, “My father never let us feel we are lesser than men.” Despite being in the limelight, she highlighted the criticism and societal norms single mothers have to confront, pointing out the slow pace of change in patriarchal mindsets.

Addressing the misconceptions and challenges faced by single mothers in society, Atre shared her personal experiences and urged women to have confidence in themselves. She emphasized the significance of financial and emotional independence, advocating for partnerships based on friendship and mutual respect rather than dependency.

Although Atre separated from her husband in 2022, she expressed gratitude for her daughter, Ashi, calling her a source of strength and support. Reflecting on the evolving portrayal of women onscreen, she commended the shift towards stronger and independent characters, citing her love for shows like ‘Delhi Crime’ and aspiring to be a part of such projects in the future.

As more women enter the filmmaking industry, Atre encouraged their creative instincts and emotional intelligence, applauding the recent Oscar win for ‘The Elephant Whisperers’, which had women as both producer and director. Despite the challenges, Atre remains optimistic about the future representation and empowerment of women in media.
