The Raspberries frontman Eric Carmen, famous for ‘All by Myself’, passes away at 74

Eric Carmen, the frontman of the American pop band Raspberries, has passed away at the age of 74. He was known for his iconic contribution to early 1970s power pop and later achieved solo success with hits like ‘All By Myself’ and ‘Hungry Eyes’. The sad news was shared by his wife, Amy Carmen, on his website.

“Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend. It brought him great joy to know that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy,” Amy Carmen wrote. No cause of death or exact date of death has been shared by the singer’s family yet. The quote from Carmen’s wife is a callback to the song ‘Love Is All That Matters’, from his 1977 solo album ‘Boats Against the Current’, as reported by ‘Variety’.

Eric Carmen, born in Cleveland, Ohio, was the primary singer and songwriter of the Raspberries. The band rebelled against the heavy, glam, and progressive-rock scenes of the early 1970s and opted for a Beatlesesque pop sound instead. Though often criticized at the time for being too pop or wimpy, the Raspberries could be a powerhouse rock band when they chose to be.

The group’s influence has lived on over the years, being revived multiple times with bands like Teenage Fanclub, the Posies, and even Nirvana citing them as inspirations. Kurt Cobain and Bruce Springsteen were among the famous names who appreciated the music of Raspberries. Eric Carmen’s contribution to the music industry will be remembered and cherished by many for years to come.
