Seoul, March 24 (IANS) – The fourth unit of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the UAE has been connected to the power grid, marking a significant milestone in the project. The Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) confirmed the successful operation and delivery of carbon-free electricity from Unit 4.
The commercial operation of Unit 4 is expected to begin later this year after additional testing. This unit will contribute 1,400 megawatts of zero-emission electricity to the UAE’s grid, enhancing the nation’s energy security. The Barakah plant, consisting of four nuclear reactors, is located 270 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi.
South Korea secured the $20 billion contract to build the Barakah plant in 2009, marking its first export of a homegrown commercial nuclear power plant. With all four units in operation, the plant will fulfill 25 per cent of the UAE’s electricity demand, supporting the nation’s energy sustainability and net-zero objectives.
KEPCO’s chief Kim Dong-cheol expressed optimism about the progress of the UAE reactor project, emphasizing the company’s commitment to its successful completion. South Korea aims to strengthen energy cooperation with the UAE and explore additional opportunities for nuclear power plant projects overseas.
