Minister hails Apple’s initiative to build workers’ homes as a milestone in PM Modi’s PLI scheme

New Delhi, April 8 (IANS) Union Minister and Thiruvananthapuram BJP candidate, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for the Apple ecosystem in India. Chandrasekhar highlighted the creation of 1,50,000 direct jobs and the construction of 50,000 modern worker housing units near factories.

Chandrasekhar stated, “It is the largest private sector initiative to build workers’ housing.” The housing units are specifically for 19-24 years old women workers, who make up about 70 per cent of Apple ecosystem employees. The Apple ecosystem has become the country’s largest blue-collar job creator, employing lakhs directly and indirectly since the PLI scheme was approved in 2021.

The minister emphasized that working women’s safety, efficiency, and productivity have improved significantly under the PLI scheme. Chandrasekhar expressed optimism that such development and progress could also come to Thiruvananthapuram. The FY24 production of iPhones surpassed Rs 1 lakh crore in February, with 70 per cent exports and a total market value of Rs 1.6 lakh crore.

This significant investment and job creation in the Apple ecosystem showcase the success of the PLI scheme initiated by Prime Minister Modi. Chandrasekhar’s comments highlight the positive impact on employment and workers’ living conditions, indicating a promising future for the technological sector in India.
