AI Model Developed to Identify Risk of PTSD in Women After Childbirth

A novel AI model helps identify CB-PTSD in women post childbirth, saving time and costs. Untreated CB-PTSD can impact breastfeeding, bonding, and mental health. The AI model successfully identified those with the disorder and those at risk, offering a promising solution for early detection.

Globally, eight million women are affected by CB-PTSD each year, leading to potential maternal depression and suicidal thoughts. The study in Scientific Reports included 1,295 postpartum participants who provided narratives about their childbirth experiences. Researchers trained an AI model to analyze these narratives and identify those at risk for CB-PTSD.

Researchers from Bar-Ilan University in Israel and institutions in the US collaborated to develop the AI model. By analyzing the narratives and questionnaire responses, the model accurately identified participants likely to have CB-PTSD. This breakthrough could revolutionize the diagnosis process, potentially improving outcomes for women experiencing postpartum mental health challenges.

The study’s findings highlight the potential of AI in healthcare, particularly in diagnosing mental health conditions like CB-PTSD. With early detection and intervention, women may receive the support they need to prevent long-term consequences. This research paves the way for further advancements in using AI to improve maternal mental health outcomes.
