February is regarded as “Black History Month“. Since the 1970s, this well-known proclamation has catalyzed many commemorations of African American history as well as accomplishments, from local television programs like Black History Minutes to presidential addresses. But why was February chosen to be the month when African American history is remembered?

President of the United States Abraham Lincoln (born February 12), who delivered the End of Slavery, and African American Revolutionary, writer, and public speaker Frederick Douglass both had significant birthdays in February (born February 14). Since Douglass and Lincoln passed away (in 1895 and 1865, respectively), the Black community has honored them on their birthdays for their sacrifices for the freedom of African Americans and the advancement of civil rights.

By establishing Negro Historical Week in February, Woodson aimed to both honor the immeasurable contributions of Lincoln as well as Douglass and to broaden the scope of an already established commemoration of the Black past to have included not simply the history and accolades of these two fantastic guys but also the background and triumphs of Black individuals in general.

Black History Month 2023 Theme

The theme for Black History month 2023 will be “Black Resistance“.

Some towns had declared February to be Negro History Month as early as the 1940s. Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month in an increasing number of locations as the American civil rights movement as well as black awareness grew in 1960s.

The organization that Woodson had formed, subsequently rebranded the Organization for the “Study of African American Life and History,” made it possible for February to become widely recognized as Black History Month in 1976. American President Ford asked everyone to take part in the celebration. The same would be done by all succeeding leaders, who would occasionally refer to the occasion as National African American History Month or National Afro-American (Black) History Month.
