Chhath Puja 2021 will begin this year on November 8 and end on November 11. The third day falls on November 10, which is the main day of the festival. It is one of the important Hindu festivals majorly for North Indians. Chhath is dedicated to the Sun God, also known as Lord Surya. 

Chhath Puja is the solar deity Lord Surya and his sister Shashthi Devi (Chhathi Maiya) are worshipped. It is mainly to thank them for the life on Earth. It is mainly celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, and also Madhesh, the southern region of Nepal.

According to Ramayana, Goddess Sita performed the puja on the day Ram-Rajya (the kingdom of Lord Ram) was established, and in Mahabharata, it was performed by Kunti after they escaped from Lakshagrih, the palace made of lacquer, which was burnt to the ground.

According to the Drik Panchang, the first day of the festival is known as Nahay Khay. People take a holy dip in a river. Women keep a half-day fast and have only a single meal.

On the second day i.e. Khurana, people fast without water from sunrise to sunset ad break the fast after sunset. The third day is the main day of Chhath Puja. On this day also people keep the full day of fast without water. They offer arghya to the setting sun as the main ritual. Fasting continues throughout the night.

On the fourth and final day, arghya is given to the rising sun, and it is called Usha Arghya. 

Chhath Puja 2021 Muhurat 

According to the Hindu calendar, the first day of Chhath Puja starts from the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. This year Kartik Shukla Chaturthi Tithi has started on Sunday, November 07, at 04:21 in the evening. This date will end today on November 08 at 01:16 in the afternoon. The Udayatithi for the fast is being received today, so today is the day of Chhath Puja.

Puja Vidhi

Those who keep the fast of Chhath Puja will eat sattvik(diet food for fast) food. Onion, garlic, etc. are avoided on this day. In the family, those who are keeping a fast will have food first and then other family members will have it. Gourd vegetables and gram dal are specially prepared in the food. 

The first day of Chhath Puja is called Nahay-Khay because food is eaten before fasting, after bath, etc. Kharna is held the next day after the bath. The person observing the fast in Chhath Puja usually doesn’t sleep on the bed.

A Chowki, A winnow (Supdi), A cane/bamboo basket, Banana leaves, Sugarcane (whole), Bananas, Fruits, Paan & Supari, Laung and Elaichi (clove and cardamom), Akshat (raw rice mixed with turmeric powder), Camphor (Kapur), Haldi (turmeric), Kumkum, Sindoor (Vermillion), Ghee (Clarified butter), Sesame oil or mustard oil (til ka tel or sarson ka tel), Lamp (Diya), Haldi shoots, A Kalash with water, Panch Patra, Raw milk, Agarbatti and Dhoop, A garland made of white thread, Kalava (sacred red thread), Radish (Mooli with its leaves), Dry fruits and sweets, A bell, Bhog (chana daal, kheer, roti, Lauki curry, thekua), Chhath Puja Katha book, Curd, Flowers, A whole coconut.
