Sourav Ganguly is given much credit for taking Indian cricket to new heights. Many cricket experts say that it was only captain Sourav Ganguly, under whose leadership the Indian team started showing courage to win anywhere in the world. Under the leadership of Ganguly, the Indian team competed against the world’s illustrious teams and achieved much success. Captain Ganguly made a disclosure that why did he choose Rahul Dravid for the vice-captain? This captain-vice-captain duo brought Team India to great success, including reaching the final of the 2003 World Cup.
Dravid was made vice-captain
Sourav Ganguly in his book ‘A Century Is Not Enough’ revealed why he had suggested Rahul Dravid’s name for the vice-captain. Ganguly had an abundance of veteran cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman, Virender Sehwag etc. But Ganguly considered Rahul Dravid, the unsung hero of Indian cricket, as the vice-captain. Ganguly wrote in his book, ‘When I first went to attend the selection committee meeting as the new captain, the selectors first asked me who you want as the vice-captain.’
Ganguly revealed, ‘I didn’t even blink and said – Rahul Dravid. Dravid and I had the same view of the team. Some people were also surprised because Dravid was not considered one of the fastest batsmen in ODI cricket. But I was confident that he could fit into this role. I started my test career with Rahul Dravid. The two of us also played a little junior cricket together. Nobody could move them, and they were calm.
Ganguly said, “It would have been a privilege for anyone as a captain that he is working with the ideals of the youth, who are putting everything in their way to become top-level batsmen.” Rahul Dravid was thus given the vice-captain of Team India. Dravid later got a captaincy and was also accused of ousting Sourav Ganguly. But over time, things got better. Dravid-Ganguly is a good friend even today and is putting his own success to the success of Indian cricket.
Let me tell you that Sourav Ganguly played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs in his career. In this, he scored 7212 and 11,363 runs respectively. Ganguly scored 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries in the test while scoring 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries in ODIs. Rahul Dravid scored 13,288 runs in 164 Tests with 36 centuries and 63 half-centuries. He scored 10,889 runs in 344 ODIs with the help of 12 centuries and 83 half-centuries.
