Janani Suraksha Yojana 2024: Online Registration, Benefits, Eligibility Criteria, and All You Need To Know

The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is an initiative by the Government of India under the framework of the National Rural Health Mission for maternal health.

The primary objective of Janani Suraksha Yojana is to reduce neonatal mortality and maternal rates by encouraging institutional deliveries among economically disadvantaged pregnant women.

Janani Suraksha Yojana was rolled out on April 12, 2005, by the then Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh.

The scheme was implemented in all states and union territories across the country.

The program focuses on states having lower performance in the health sector.

The Janani Suraksha Yojana provides financial assistance to marginalized and disadvantaged pregnant women with delivery and post-delivery care with financial assistance. This is a hundred percent centrally sponsored scheme.

JSY has designed the ASHA or Accredited Social Health Activist workers as a crucial link between pregnant women and the government. The success of the scheme will be tested by the upsurge in the percentage of institutional deliveries among poor families.

Benefits of Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)

Some of the crucial benefits offered as a part of Janani Suraksha Yojana are the following.

JSY is implemented in states having considerably low rates of institutional delivery. Thus, the states are divided into two categories based on this.

  • Low Performing States (LPS): In this category, Jammu and Kashmir, Orissa, Rajasthan, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh falls. These states have low rates of institutional delivery.
  • High Performing States (HPS): In this category, those states fall, which do not come in the LPS category.

Eligible women and beneficiaries under the Jan Suraksha Yojana need both a Child Health (MCH) card and a JSY card. Under the guidance of an Auxiliary Nurse Birthing specialist (ANM) and a Medical Officer (MO), a micro-birth plan is required to be developed by the ASHA, Anganwadi worker (AWW), or another recognized link worker under the scheme.
