Kargil Vijay Diwas – The Kargil war which was fought in the Himalayan Heights in 1999 was an epoch and a decisive moment for the nation. It was for the first time after 29 years that the population of the nation witnessed the rumbling of war drums. It was also a moment when the nation was completely unprepared for war. The Atal Bihari Government had fallen and a caretaker government was running the affairs of the nation.
However, the nation, the political leadership, and the Indian Army rose to the occasion and within a period of two months forced the Pakistan Army to vacate every inch of Indian territory. The war officially ended on 26 June 1999 and the Army Chief General V.P.Singh told a grateful nation that the tasks entrusted to the Indian Army were completed. The day is celebrated every year on 26 June as Kargil Victory Diwas.
Kargil Vijay Diwas: A Resolute Tale of Courage and Patriotism
The Indian Army usually vacated the forward posts in the heights of Kargil since it was very inhospitable during the winter months. The Indian Army re-occupied these posts in the summer months again and this process was continuing for years without any hitch. However, the Pakistani Army Chief hit upon a cunning plan and sent soldiers of the North Light Infantry to occupy these bunkers which were vacated by the Indian Army.

The process started in January and by the time the Indian Army became aware of this fact, the Pak Army was well entrenched in the bunkers located in the heights of Kargil sector. Worse, the Pak infantry had a clear view of the National Highway No 1 which connected Srinagar with Leh and could literally cut off Indian supplies to this region. The enemy was perched at heights and the Indian Army had to literally fight their way to the top. The Government’s belief that the Army must not cross the LOC under any circumstances further complicated the situation since the Pak infiltrators had a steady supply open from the other side of the border.
It is the bravery of Indian soldiers which won the day for the nation. The Indian soldiers fought with grit and determination against almost impossible names. Warriors like Vikram Batra, Manoj Pandey, Yogendra Yadav and Sanjay Singh became household names. The nation remembers these heroes and hundreds of others who sacrificed their lives for the nation and kept our borders safe to this day.

International Workers’ Memorial Day is observed on 28 April every year. It’s a day when we remember people who lost their lives at work. According to 2022-23 statistics, around 145 workers lost their lives in the UK due to severe injuries at work.
International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) gives a platform to the trade union movement to highlight the ongoing neglect of the safety and health of workers and to campaign for better protection measures in the work environment.
No one deserves to come home from a workplace with poor health and unsafe practices. There are many workplaces where employers care more about profits than effective work measures.

The day is observed for those who were killed in accidents in the workplace or due to diseases caused by the nature of work. Many organizations around the globe host events and seminars that honor the families of workers who passed away at work.
Some other activities include laying wreaths, multi-faith religious services, raising public awareness of issues, unveiling monuments, and planting trees.
It should be noted that safety and health representatives in the workplace must never be understated. They represent members who ensure employers follow their legal obligations. H&S reps are legally obliged to investigate any mishaps or accidents.

They investigate complaints made by members as well as act as representatives on the employer’s behalf.
It should be noted that transportation causes more deaths in the workplace than in other work environments. The next common reasons for workplace deaths are slips and falls, workplace violence (human and animal), exposure to harmful substances, and contact with poisonous objects and equipment.

World Malaria Day is observed on April 25th every year. Many local and government healthcare systems, as well as policymakers, promote the necessary actions required to tackle the problem of malaria.
Malaria is a parasitic infection spread through a female (Anopheles) mosquito. It can lead to severe illness. Every year, around 200 million people get infected by it, including people from 90 endemic countries as well as 12.5 million tourists who travel to malaria-prone countries.
Many don’t know this, but it is a Plasmodium parasite that has a complex life cycle that can cause periodic fevers. Most of the time, patients recover quickly from malaria, but in critical cases, it can cause coma, cerebral malaria, malarial anaemia, and sometimes death if proper treatment is not administered.

Every year, a new theme is introduced. This year’s theme will be “Accelerating the fight against malaria for a more equitable world”. It focuses more on the progress made to reduce the cases of malaria. Malaria not only continues to degrade health and cost people’s lives, but it also puts individuals in a terrible loop of suffering.
Malaria is the deadliest disease across the globe. Globally, in 2017, there were over 219 million cases and 435,000 deaths related to malaria. So, it is important to spread awareness about diseases and how to prevent them. Awareness includes early precautions and educating the public on early symptoms and other treatment options.
According to research, if early diagnosis is done with proper treatment, malaria can be reduced.
