National Epilepsy Day 2021 History, Significance, and More

Every Year, 17 November is marked as National Epilepsy Day in the country to create awareness about a central nervous system disorder, which makes brain activities abnormal, called Epilepsy (Commonly known as “मिर्गी का दौरा“). Talking about its causes, Epilepsy causes seizures or periods of unusual behaviour, sensations and sometimes loss of awareness. Epilepsy is not dependent on any disease or virus, even it’s not genetic, it can develop in both males and females of all ages and backgrounds.

National Epilepsy Day History

National Epilepsy Day is an initiative by the Epilepsy Foundation of India. The non-profitable charitable organization was founded by Dr Nirmal Surya in 2009, and it aims to reduce the prevalence of Epilepsy in the country. Its head office is in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Significance

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases. As per data from the World Health Organization (WHO), currently, about 50 million people are victims of epilepsy globally.

What you can do, if you see an individual having a Generalized Seizure!

  • Put cushion under the person’s head.
  • Clear the surrounding area, remove any dangerous articles.
  • Loosen any tight clothing.
  • Do not restrain the person.
  • Turn the person to his/her side. This will help to drain the saliva and keep the airway cleaner.
  • Do not give anything to Eat or Drink.
  • Do not place anything in the mouth or try to force the teeth apart.
  • Take the person to the nearest hospital at the earliest for appropriate treatment.
