Surrounded by sea from three sides, India is a peninsular country. In such a situation it becomes necessary to promote its security for trade and defense. Every Year, April 5 is celebrated as National Maritime Day to encourage the shipping industry in India.

The shipping industry contributes significantly to the country’s economy. The goal of celebrating this day is to make the common people aware of the activities of the Indian shipping industry as well as its important role in the economy of India.

National Maritime Day was first observed on April 5, 1964, to mark the anniversary of SS Loyalty, the first Indian flag merchant ship, which sailed from Mumbai to London in 1919.

India is also a member of the International Maritime Organization. Which is the international standard-setting authority on a global scale, responsible for monitoring and protecting maritime highways. And works to prevent pollution in the sea.

On 5 April 1919, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited, S.S. Loyalty set out on an international trip from India (Mumbai) to the United Kingdom (London). It is still considered an important step in Indian shipping history as the sea routes were controlled by Britain at that time.
