Onam 2021 Date in India

The Onam or Thiruvonam will start on 12 August 2021, Thursday and will end on 23 August, Monday. As per Panchang, Thiruvonam Nakshathram will Begin on 20 August at 09:25 PM and will end on 21 August at 08:21 PM.

History and Story of Onam

Here we tell you what’s the History or Story of Onam? Onam is the day of remembrance of Emperor Mahabali, whom even the gods were jealous of. Mahabali is believed to be the grandson of Prahlad, a demon king and a devotee of Vishnu. During the reign of Mahabali, all human beings were equal. Neither rich nor poor.

But Mahabali’s rule had made the gods jealous. That is why the jealous gods went to Vekhunt Dham and told Lord Vishnu about Mahabali. At the request of the gods, Lord Vishnu in the guise of a dwarf approached Mahabali and asked for alms. Mahabali, who was sacrificing Vishwajeet at this time, also expressed his desire to give. Today the whole world calls the “Vaman” incarnation from the incarnation that Lord Vishnu had taken. Vamana asked Mahabali for three feet of soil as much as three feet. Accepting this, Mahabali allowed him to measure feet of soil with his feet.

As we have already told you that at that time the whole world was the kingdom of Mahabali. So Lord Vishnu increased his presence and measured heaven, earth and hell in the first two steps. When there was no place for the third pair, Mahabali presented his head. By the touch of his feet, Vamana freed Mahabali from pride and brought him to Patal Lok.

Vamana also allowed Mahabali to meet his subjects once a year on the day of Thiruvonam in the month of Chingam. Thus, it is believed that Mahabali visits his subjects invisibly on Thiruvonam every year. This day is celebrated as Thiruvonam or Onam.

Significance

Talking about the Significance of Onam, this is a harvest festival of Kerala, which last for 10-days, performing new rituals every day. The ten days are sequentially known as Atham, Chithira, Chodhi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketa, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradam and Thiruvonam. The festival is observed mainly by Malayali Hindus of the Kerala state.
