Tubs – Types and Decor Ideas

Published

on

We can all agree that the bathroom is a functional space. No one spends too much time there. What this means is that not many people will invest time and money in sprucing up the space. The attention tends to go to the kitchen, living room, or bedrooms.

But here is the thing though. You can transform a bland bathroom space with some very simple elements. Think lighting, mirrors, plants, and stylish faucets.

And, that is not all. The bathtub you choose and simple decor tricks can bring in a luxurious, sophisticated look. Let’s explore this part a little more by looking at the different types of tubs. We will also throw in some decor ideas to try.

1. Freestanding Tubs

Freestanding Tubs

Number one on our list is the freestanding tubs. There are many words you can use to describe them. These include elegant, sophisticated, classy, and timeless. It is no wonder they are a favourite in top-end hotels and high-priced homes.

Pick your favourite home interior decor magazine or watch luxury homes shows. You are likely to find them as the centrepiece in the bathrooms. Does this mean they are out of the common man’s price range? The answer is no.

There are so many options, ranging from high to low-cost ones. It just depends on the size and type of material you choose. A copper freestanding bathtub will cost you a pretty penny. But, a ceramic one still looks good without causing a dent in your decor budget.

Another question would be, can you have a freestanding tub in a small bathroom? The answer is yes, but you may have to go with a smaller size. Remember though, you will need space around the tub. So, have your bathroom configurations in mind when shopping.

Stock up on freestanding tub accessories for that extra elegance. You will need a caddy or bath stool to hold them though. The downside of freestanding tubs is the lack of storage.

Choose chrome or metal faucets to infuse a contemporary or modern look. If you prefer vintage, go for clawfoot or pedestal tubs.

Standalone tubs with showers are ideal if there isn’t too much bathroom space. You have so many choices with the type of showerheads. Waterfall showerheads, for example, will have you feeling like you are bathing in the rain. Others have pulsating and water blasting features to soothe tired muscles.

2. Alcove Bathtubs

Alcove Bathtubs

Alcove tubs are fantastic because they do not take up too much space. They fit into a recess so that you have three walls surrounding the tub. Installation costs for such tubs are not high and the process is not very complicated.

They also come in a range of styles and materials. The main disadvantage is that they are typically not very large. The standard size is about 60 inches, but you can get slightly larger.

Alcove tubs would, therefore, be a fantastic addition to the kid’s bathroom. They also work well for apartments or smaller homes where bathroom space may be an issue.

Like in the case of the freestanding tub and shower combo, do the same for the alcove tub.  In that case, you will need a glass enclosure. Create an interesting feel with stylish tiles for the surrounding walls.

You can also build shelves into the walls surrounding the tub. But, you will, of course, need to tile them as well due to moisture. But, it saves you from needing extra cabinets to hold your bathroom accessories.

3. Drop-In Bathtubs

A drop-in tub fits into a pre-prepared deck or platform. The rim sits flush with the deck or just slightly above it.

As you can imagine, installation can be a bit time-consuming. You have to get someone to prepare a deck with the dimensions of the tub you want to put in.

The preparation can make drop-in bathtubs a bit more expensive. But, such tubs bring in a spa feeling to your bathroom. They are fantastic for relaxing and unwinding.

Get stylish faucets to take the sophistication of the tub a notch higher. The deck provides sufficient space to hold the bathroom accessories. So, stock up on scented soaps, oils, shower gels, and candles for that romantic evening soak.

And, if you really want the ultimate relaxation, add whirlpools or jets. Your supplier should be able to advise you on the additions.
