Who are the Taliban?

Mullah Omar founded the Taliban with many of his followers to fight against crime and corruption during the civil war in 1994. Taliban means “students” in the Pashto language. The name was given as other members were the students of Mullah Omar.

Who are the main leaders of the Taliban?

According to Reuters Haibatullah Akhundzada, the Islamic legal scholar is the Taliban’s supreme leader who holds final authority over the group’s political, religious, and military affairs. He took over the leadership after Akhtar Mansour, was killed in a US drone strike near the Afghan-Pakistan border in 2016.

What do Talibani’s want?

The Taliban, which promised to curb crime and corruption, later imposed Sharia law in Afghanistan. The biggest atrocities faced by girls and women of Afghanistan are because of Sharia law. It banned girls and women from schools and workplaces and was not allowed to go anywhere without Hijab and accompany of men. The Taliban now also has promised to restored peace and security before coming into power but have already started their door-to-door campaign to find educated women and supporters of Ashraf Ghani’s government.

History of Taliban in Afghanistan

In 1996, when the Taliban era started the first time they captured Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, overthrowing the regime of President Burhanuddin Rabbani. Taliban introduced punishments like public executions of convicted murderers and adulterers and amputations for those found guilty of theft. Men were forced to grow beards and women had to wear a burka.

What happened in the last twenty years?

Osama Bin Laden, the then mastermind of the Taliban attacked the twin towers of America on 11 September 2001. Which killed many Americans and led to a USA and Afghanistan war. Osama Bin Laden and his al-Qaeda movement threatened America openly many times. The then-president of the USA George W Bush started a war against al-Qaeda and a searching operation to kill Osama Bin Laden. Though they killed Osama Bin Laden in 2010 in Pakistan, the USA never ended its war with Afghanistan.

In 2018, when the US and Taliban signed a peace deal and signed one again in February 2020. When Joe Biden new president of the USA started taking back their troops as per his promise in the election, the Taliban have started capturing all the territories of Afghanistan.

How will evacuation happen?

Many neighbouring countries and allies have promised to help Afghan civilians evacuate the country. The United Arab Emirates’ foreign ministry said it would be facilitating the evacuation of foreign diplomats and staff through that country’s airports. Germany said that it would send military planes to evacuate German nationals and Afghan support staff.
