World Leprosy Day is a widely celebrated healthcare event as well as an awareness day of leprosy. Every year it is celebrated on the last Sunday of January. This year in 2023, World Leprosy Day will be observed on 29th January. 

Here in India, the day is observed as an awareness campaign for “Anti-Leprosy Day”. It is observed on the day of Martyr’s Day (Shaheed Diwas). This is so because Mahatma Gandhi wanted to find a cure for the cause of Leprosy (Hansen’s disease).

Every year, they come up with a new theme to make the campaign more effective. This year in 2023, the theme is  “Act Now. End Leprosy.” It encourages the elite leaders of the world as well as the decision-makers to eradicate the disease by actively taking part in cure-finding initiatives and promoting the awareness program in the world. 

The term “ACT Now” makes the patient aware of the harmful effects of the disease and its last term  “End Leprosy” means sending the message to the world about how quickly the disease can be spread and requires immediate action to control it further spreading.
