Edathua Perunnal is an important festival which is celebrated in God’s own kingdom, Kerala with much pomp and grandeur. The venue of the festival is St, George’s Church, Edathua, 23 km southeast of Alappuzha town. The church is itself an architectural wonder and its pomp and grandeur reminds of the grand basilica and churches of Europe.
The St George church which is the location of the Edathua Perunnal is situated on the banks of the Pamba River in the Allappuzza district. The Edathua Church is identified for its distinct architecture and was built in 1810. It is dedicated to St.George the legendary Saint in Christianity.
The Edathua Perunnal is celebrated from April 27 to May 7 of each year. The statue of the legendary Saint George is taken in a palanquin on journey through the city. The statue is bedecked in jewels and gold and taken out as a procession which ends at the basilica. Prayers are offered and the blessings taken for a prosperous and joyous year. The festival is marked with numerous cultural fêtes and feasts.

The Church Ground is teeming with shops and food stalls. The shops sell a variety of wares from utensils jewelry. Every evening cultural program which showcases the rich tradition of Kerala is held. Many cultural icons present dance programs which include Kathakalli, Bharat Natyam and Mohniattam. Edathua Perunnal Kerala is one such festival which is a real crowd puller in the state.
The venue is easily accessible by bus from Thiruvalla bus stand and takes about one hour. The nearest railway station is Thiruvalla which is 15 kilometers from the festival site. The nearest airport is Cochin Airport.
