Choti Diwali is just around the corner. One of the most favourite festivals of Hindus is here. Choti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi will be celebrated on Monday, October 24, 2022. The Chaturdashi Tithi will start at 6.03 PM on October 23 and will end by 5.27 PM the next day.
However, surprisingly this year both Choti Diwali, as well as Badi Diwali, is taking place on the same day. That doesn’t mean their significance would be less.
As per Hindu rituals and calendar, Narak Chaturdashi or say Choti Diwali usually falls on Chaturdashi or the 14th day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. The day is corresponding to mid-October or November in the Gregorian calendar. Narak Chaturdashi also goes by many names such as Choti Diwali, Roop Chaudas, Roop Chaturdashi and Narak Nivaran Chaturdashi.

Many Hindu communities often confuse Choti Diwali with Kali Chaudas or Bhoot Chaturdashi with Naraka Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas. But it is celebrated a day before Narak Chaturdashi. As per legends, the day is associated with the killing of the demon Narakasura by Maa Kali. As per Hindu manuscripts and literature, there are two legends behind the killing- the first one is with the hands of Goddess Kali and the other is Lord Krishna along with his queen-consort Satyabhama killed Narakasura in order to maintain peace in the world. These are the reason behind the celebration of Choti Diwali. It is an auspicious festival with the utmost importance. The main theme behind the celebration of Naraka Chaturdashi is to defeat bad habits as well as the evil that makes your life miserable or harmful to humankind on earth. In some parts of India, Goddess Kali is worshipped on this day.
