Under the direction of Dr. J. Gamgee, the first International Veterinary Congress was convened in 1863. Later, this project evolved into the World Veterinary Association (WVA) that exists today. The WVA serves as the governing body for both national veterinary associations and international veterinary groups that specialize in various fields of veterinary medicine. Worldwide veterinary professionals are united and represented by the WVA. World Veterinary Day has been observed annually since 2000 as a way to honor veterinary specialists.
Goals for World Veterinary Day
This holiday is observed to support the care and health of animals. On this day, the recognition that humans and animals lead interwoven lives and are therefore dependent on one another was the main topic.
This organization’s activities are primarily focused on minimizing the consequences of climate change, ensuring intelligent and responsible use of natural assets, and ensuring the correct disposal of medications.
How does one celebrate it?
The WVA hosts several events and seminars to share knowledge about protecting the surroundings for generations to come and ensuring the coexistence of humans and animals.
A World Veterinary Association member who is working by themselves or with other organizations receives an annual award from the WVA and the Global Animal Medicines Association. This honor is only presented to people whose efforts or contributions fit with the WVA’s theme.
