Gustavo Badell also known by his nickname The Freakin’ ‘Rican breathed his last on July 13th, 2023 after suffering from a stroke. Gustavo Badell was born in Venezuela before moving to Puerto Rico. His first passion was boxing and he started lifting weights to increase his muscle strength when he was 15. His muscle growth was impressive and by 19 he had a body build which saw him competing in the 1991 Junior Caribbean Bodybuilding Championships.

Early Life

After a stint of six years when he underwent extensive weight training, he turned pro and won his first major event, the 1997 Caribbean Championships. His fame spread rapidly and his first major IFB (International Federation of BodyBuilders) participation was in 1998 when he competed in the Grand Prix of Germany.

The following year he competed in the International Federation of BodyBuilders Night of Champions (now called the New York Pro) and ended at the 14th position. His performance was lackluster and uneventful till 2003 when the professional bodybuilder Milos Sarcev started training him. He was placed 18th in his first Ironman Pro Invitational in 200 and 24th at the Mr. Olympia appearance in 2002.

Success and Rise To Fame

However, between 2002 and 2004 he tasted success and stood third at the 2002 Toronto Pro Invitational. This was followed by another third position in the 2004 Ironman Pro Invitational. He again bagged the third slot at the 2004 Show of Strength Pro Championship and finally at the 2004 Mr. Olympia he bagged the third place, taking a $50,000 prize and an Olympia medal to boot.

He finally bagged the top position at the 2005 Ironman Pro Invitational, which is an extremely prestigious show. He beat the likes of Lee Priest and pushed himself forward as a major Mr. Olympia contender. Even though he did not win the Mr.Olympia championship he was considered a major contender and it was ill luck that the title evaded him.

Gustavo has made it to the cover of many prestigious fitness magazines and this included the ever-popular magazine FLEX. He has appeared in advertisements of numerous supplement manufacturing products.
