Karthigai Deepam is a religious festival celebrated in the Hindu community. Mainly it is observed in Andhra Pradesh. It is also called Karthikai Deepam. It is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya. In Tamil Nadu, the festival is also called Karthikai Vilakkidu while in Kerala it is called Bharani deepam, Trikartika, Karthika Deepam, Tirrukarttikai, Kartika Villaku and Bharani deepam to name a few. It is observed under a full moon.
People lit diyas and seek blessing from the mighty God in the Karthigai month. It is one of the few festivals in the Hindu community that is widely celebrated across the country. Mostly it is observed in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. All the devotees take a dip in the Ganga river. This honours the Goddess Karthiyayeni Bhagavati.
Its name is derived from the God Kartikeya. In some parts of North India, it is called Karthik Purnima. Puja is performed during the evening. The entire country is filled with joy and enthusiasm.
Devotees wake up early in the morning and take a bath. The house is cleaned and decorated with rangoli and diyas. Lamps are lit to welcome the gods in the house. Some like to keep fast and break it after their puja in the evening. Clay diyas are lit, different types of lamps are used signifying different religious symbols.
