To set the record straight, they can be formed in marine, freshwater, as well as coastal ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, wet grasslands, underground aquifers, oases, peatlands, estuaries, and oases, to name a few. They can also be formed in human-made sites like saltpans, fishponds, and reservoirs
Although they occupy only 6% of the Earth’s total space, around 40% of the Earth’s animals and plants rely on them to survive.
