Exercise Milan has grown from 5 IOR navies to 50 navies across the Indo-Pacific: Indian Navy chief

Indian Navy Chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar spoke at the opening ceremony of ‘Exercise Milan 2024’, highlighting the increasing importance of collective maritime endeavors. Over 50 navies are participating in the exercise, including 15 ships from foreign countries and nearly 20 Indian Navy ships. The exercise aims to strengthen collaboration among participating navies.

The exercise commenced with a harbor phase that included discussions, subject matter expert exchanges, and table-top exercises. An International Maritime Seminar is scheduled for the next two days, providing senior commanders with a platform to exchange ideas on crucial maritime challenges and opportunities. The sea phase, commencing on February 24, will see warships participating in operational drills and refining collective skills.

In addition to the professional interactions, recreational events, social gatherings, cultural tours, sports competitions, and a city parade are being organized to strengthen camaraderie and provide a flavor of India’s rich heritage and culture. The Indian Navy chief also welcomed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as the Chief Guest for the event.

The exercise also includes a Milan Technical Exposition (MTEX) to provide a glimpse of India’s indigenous industry powered by the vibrant startup ecosystem and MSMEs. The Indian Navy chief complimented the Eastern Naval Command for their efforts in organizing the event, emphasizing the importance of fostering long-lasting relationships among participating nations.

Admiral Kumar stressed that ‘Milan’ is about more than just naval exercises, as it showcases the collective expertise and strength of maritime nations. The exercise aims to provide a collaborative maritime future and create meaningful interactions and positive outcomes among friends and partners.
