LG writes to CM for clearance of pending audit reports for Delhi Assembly session

Delhi LG Urges CM to Clear Pending CAG Reports

Delhi Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, has written a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urging the city government’s Finance Minister to clear five Comptroller and Auditor-General of India (CAG) reports and one report on the government’s accounts for presentation before the House within this session.

In the letter, Saxena highlighted the legal obligations outlined in Section 48 of the GNCTD Act, 1991, and Article 151 of the Constitution of India, which mandate the presentation of CAG reports before the Legislative Assembly. He also emphasized the importance of these reports as constitutionally-mandated independent and impartial assessments of the government’s performance.

The letter further urged the Finance Minister to expeditiously process the reports so that they can be laid before the House within the current Budget Session.

It is crucial for the government to share an objective account of its performance and expenditure of public funds with the people through the House, stated the letter from the Lieutenant Governor.

The pending CAG reports pertain to the state’s finances and have been awaiting consideration by the Finance Minister since August 2023.

Saxena’s letter serves as a reminder of the government’s constitutional obligation to present CAG reports and seek necessary corrective measures based on their findings.

The Lieutenant Governor’s communication to the Chief Minister underscores the significance of upholding transparency and accountability in government financial matters.

In response to the letter, it is expected that the Delhi government will take necessary steps to ensure the timely processing and presentation of the pending CAG reports before the Legislative Assembly.

The timely clearance and presentation of these reports will enable the government to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities and provide the public with an objective assessment of its financial performance.

The ball is now in the court of the Delhi government’s Finance Minister to take swift action in processing the pending CAG reports for presentation before the House in the current Budget Session.
