HC dismisses Delhi University's plea against protests, deems it a police matter

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS) The Delhi High Court has disposed of a petition from Delhi University concerning protests led by a former professor, Dr. Ritu Singh, at the North Campus. The court stated that the issue at hand was a law and order matter falling under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Police.

According to Justice Subramonium Prasad, the university can file a complaint directly with the Commissioner of Police for action based on legal standards. The university alleged that Dr. Singh and her followers were occupying land in front of Gate No. 4, disrupting university operations.

Advocate Monika Arora, representing the university, highlighted that the protestors were outsiders causing disruptions. Justice Prasad emphasized the police’s primary responsibility in such situations and declined to issue a directive for police action, citing constitutional implications.

The petition stated that Dr. Singh’s activities hindered access to university premises, involved defamation and threats towards officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, and defacing public property. The court expressed unwillingness to further pursue the matter, disposing of the petition at this stage.

The university sought the court’s intervention to ensure uninterrupted and peaceful university operations. However, the court emphasized the police’s role in addressing law and order issues, signaling that the university can pursue the matter directly with the Commissioner of Police for resolution.
