Allahabad High Court Orders Meerut Police to Release Camels to Owner

The Allahabad High Court has ordered the police and administration in Meerut to release 28 camels belonging to Mohd. Anas. The camels were seized in 2019 for sacrifice on Bakrid, and now the district police are searching for them following the court’s directive for their release.

The camels were seized from Anas in 2019 and handed over to Vikrant Vats, who claimed association with an animal care organization. Anas filed a complaint with the city magistrate in Meerut, seeking the return of his animals or compensation for their purchase cost.

The court ruled in Anas’ favor, ordering the camels to be returned to him. When Anas did not receive his camels as per the court order, he moved to the high court for further action. The date for the next hearing in the case has been set for March 18, as per the court’s instructions.

In August 2019, a large number of camels were brought from Rajasthan to Meerut for sacrifice during Bakrid. The police seized the camels citing a ban on sacrifice, leading to the legal battle between Anas and the authorities over the ownership and custody of the animals.

The case highlights the importance of animal welfare and legal procedures governing the ownership and treatment of animals in sacrificial practices. The court’s intervention aims to ensure the rightful owner gets back his camels and asserts the rule of law in such matters.
