CBI secures custody of Sheikh Shahjahan after lengthy legal battle

Kolkata, March 6 (IANS) – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) finally obtained the physical custody of Sheikh Shahjahan, the accused mastermind behind the attack on ED and CAPF teams at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district on January 5. The Calcutta High Court directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal police to hand over Shahjahan to the CBI team, which took place at Bhabani Bhavan in Kolkata.

The CBI team had to wait for over three hours at Bhabani Bhavan to get Shahjahan’s physical custody. The CID officers took Shahjahan to the S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital for a medical check-up before finally handing him over to the CBI team. Shahjahan was spotted sitting silently in one of the vehicles as the convoy of CBI vehicles left Bhabani Bhavan around 7 p.m.

Following the medical check-up at S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital, Shahjahan was taken to the E.S.I. Hospital in Joka for a second round of medical examination. After this, he will be taken to CBI’s Nizam Palace office in central Kolkata. The CBI team had previously attempted to take Shahjahan into custody on Tuesday, but left empty-handed as the state government had moved the Supreme Court to challenge the high court’s order.
