Tripura Police capture drugs worth Rs 5 crore, 3 suspects arrested

In a significant drug bust, Tripura Police seized 55,000 methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 5 crore from a vehicle near Bagbasa Naka Point in north Tripura. Three individuals were arrested in connection with the incident. The highly addictive drugs were smuggled from Myanmar and entered Tripura through Mizoram and Assam states.

North Tripura district Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty stated that the police acted on a tip-off to intercept the vehicle, leading to the recovery of the illicit tablets. The arrested drug peddlers are from Karimganj in southern Assam. Investigations are ongoing to gather further details about the smuggling operation.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha praised the police for their efforts in seizing the drugs, emphasizing the importance of creating a drug-free India. Methamphetamine tablets from Myanmar have seen a surge in trafficking in recent years, with high demand in northeastern states, India, and Bangladesh.

In a related initiative, the Assam Rifles conducted an awareness program as part of the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ in Tripura’s Unakoti District. The program aimed to educate local youths about the harmful effects of narcotics and psychotropic substances. Assam Rifles is committed to addressing substance abuse issues through education, counseling, and community engagement to make Tripura a drug-free state.

The authorities are working diligently to combat drug trafficking and addiction, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to create a safer and healthier environment for all residents. The ongoing enforcement actions and awareness campaigns are crucial in the fight against illicit drug activities in the region.
