Karnataka: FIR lodged against Congress leader for derogatory comments about PM Modi

Bengaluru, March 12 (IANS) – Karnataka Police have registered an FIR against Congress leader G.S. Manjunath on Tuesday for making objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The case was filed by BJP Mandal President Kalleshaiah, citing that Manjunath’s statement could disturb the peace in society and bring disrepute to the post of the PM.

Manjunath, the President of Labour Welfare Board, is facing charges under IPC Sections 504 (intentional insult to provoke) and 506 (criminal intimidation) for his comments. His remarks came in response to PM Modi’s announcement of reducing the price of LPG by Rs 100, which led to a viral video of his speech.

The Karnataka BJP has criticized the Congress for targeting PM Modi, with the police now conducting further investigations into the matter. The complaint against Manjunath highlights the sensitivity of political discourse and the responsibility of leaders in maintaining peace and respect in society.

The FIR against Manjunath underscores the legal consequences of making derogatory remarks against public figures, especially those holding the position of the Prime Minister. The incident also raises concerns about the impact of inflammatory statements on social harmony and the need for accountability in political communication.

As the investigation progresses, the case against Manjunath serves as a reminder of the boundaries within which political discourse should operate, with the police and legal system playing a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and addressing instances of potential defamation and incitement.
