AIADMK still uncertain about LS alliances in TN as PMK, DMDK remain elusive

Chennai, March 17 (IANS) The AIADMK party in Tamil Nadu is struggling to form an alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls despite the Election Commission announcing the schedule. After breaking ties with the BJP in September 2023, the AIADMK is now aiming to form a ‘Mega Alliance’.

The AIADMK is currently in talks with minor parties like ‘Puthiya Tamilagam’ and ‘Purathu Bharatham’, but has not secured a major ally yet. Sources suggest that the party is confident about forming an alliance with the PMK, the political arm of the Vanniyar community, although the decision is pending.

The PMK, however, seems to be undecided between the AIADMK and the BJP for an alliance. There are reports of a division within the party leadership, with founder Dr. S. Ramadoss favoring AIADMK while his son and party state president, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, leaning towards the BJP for potential political gains.

In addition to the PMK, the AIADMK is also pursuing an alliance with the DMDK, founded by late Tamil superstar Vijayakanth. Both parties are in discussions with the BJP, as the DMDK’s general secretary, Premalatha Vijayakanth, is reportedly negotiating with both AIADMK and PMK for a potential partnership.

With the Lok Sabha polls scheduled for April 19 in Tamil Nadu, nominations beginning from March 20 and ending on March 27, time is running out for the AIADMK to solidify its alliances. A senior party leader revealed that the AIADMK is likely to form an alliance with both the PMK and the DMDK, despite challenges.

As the political landscape heats up in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK faces a race against time to secure its alliances before the campaigning period commences on April 2. Stay tuned for further developments as parties maneuver in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
