Bangladeshi smuggler killed in BSF firing at Tripura border, trooper injured; 3 Rohingyas arrested at Agartala station

A Bangladeshi smuggler was killed and another injured by BSF troopers along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Unakoti district. The BSF also apprehended three Rohingyas at the Agartala railway station who were attempting to go to Bangladesh clandestinely.

The incident occurred near the Magroli Border Out Post, where BSF personnel observed smugglers approaching from both sides of the border. The smugglers became aggressive, encircled the team, and assaulted a BSF personnel, prompting the troopers to open fire, killing one smuggler and injuring another.

The injured BSF personnel was evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment, and his condition is now stable. In a separate operation, three Rohingyas were apprehended at the Agartala railway station, revealing their entry into India through the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal eight years ago.

The detained Rohingyas confessed to attempting to go to Bangladesh but failing due to heightened security measures. The BSF has reported a significant number of arrests along the international border, with 744 persons detained in 2023 and 369 in 2022 for illegal crossings.

In a related operation, BSF troopers seized suspected brown sugar worth Rs 1.45 crore from a general coach at Kumarghat railway station in northern Tripura. The drugs were found gift-wrapped in soap cases to avoid detection, but no arrests were made in connection with the seizure.

Overall, these incidents highlight the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in curbing smuggling and illegal border crossings in the region. Authorities are taking necessary legal actions against the apprehended individuals to prevent such activities in the future.
