India appoints Vinay Kumar as new Ambassador to Russia

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Senior diplomat Vinay Kumar has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Russia, replacing Pavan Kapoor. Kumar, a 1992 batch officer of Indian Foreign Service, has been serving as the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar since 2021. He is expected to take up his new assignment shortly.

Vinay Kumar, a graduate of IIT-Kharagpur, has an extensive diplomatic career. He served as the Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2018-2020 and as India’s Political Coordinator in the UNSC in 2011-12. He has also served in various Indian missions around the world, including Tashkent, Bishkek, Ottawa, Warsaw, Tehran, New York, and Kathmandu.

Kumar’s appointment to the role of Ambassador to Russia comes at a crucial time as Russian President Vladimir Putin recently won the Presidential elections by securing 87.97% of the votes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated President Putin on his victory and expressed his commitment to strengthening the partnership between India and Russia.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced Kumar’s appointment, highlighting his experience and expertise in the field of diplomacy. Kumar is set to bring his skills to further enhance the relationship between India and Russia during his tenure as Ambassador.
