Bhushan Gagrani assumes role as BMC Commissioner

The Maharashtra government appoints Bhushan Gagrani as the new Commissioner of BMC, taking over from Iqbal Chahal. The Election Commission expressed displeasure over Chahal not being transferred after completing three years in office. Gagrani, a 1990-batch IAS officer, was previously the Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office.

Chahal handed over the charge to Gagrani, expressing gratitude to the government for the opportunity to serve as the BMC Commissioner for nearly 4 years. He mentioned his efforts during the Covid pandemic and thanked the media for their cooperation. The ECI directed the state government to take action following their previous orders regarding Chahal’s transfer.

The compliance report submitted by the state government suggested three names for the BMC chief position, including Gagrani, Anil Diggikar, and Sanjay Mukherjee. Gagrani’s appointment comes after the ECI’s intervention in the transfer of Chahal from the BMC. Chahal’s contribution to serving the citizens of Mumbai was acknowledged in his social media post, where he expressed satisfaction in being able to serve to the best of his abilities.
