Congress withdraws candidate from Ghatal in Bengal a day after fielding her

The Congress party faced internal opposition resulting in the withdrawal of Papiya Chakraborty’s candidature from the Ghatal Lok Sabha constituency in West Midnapore district. This decision was made barely 24 hours after her name was announced as the party nominee for the seat.

On Monday evening, Congress’ central observer for West Bengal, Golam Ahmed Mir, confirmed the withdrawal of Chakraborty’s candidature from Ghatal following discussions with the state and district leadership. An alternative candidate will be named soon.

Sources within the state Congress revealed that leaders from West Midnapore district expressed serious concerns about Chakraborty’s candidacy during the meeting with Mir. Chakraborty currently serves as the General Secretary of the social media cell of the Congress in West Bengal.

The district leadership went as far as submitting a memorandum to Mir, urging for the withdrawal of Chakraborty’s name as the party candidate from Ghatal. The Congress is expected to announce a new candidate for the constituency in the near future.
