Bohag Bihu popularly known as Rongali Bihu is an auspicious festival mostly observed in the state in Assam. It is a festival of harvest, marking the beginning of Assamese New Year.
The day is celebrated with many vibrant customs, bringing family and friends together, and enjoying food and clothing. Besides this, Assam has two more Bihu festivals called Kongali Bihu and
Bhogali Bihu/Magh Bihu. Among all three, Bohag Bihu holds great importance and is celebrated with full enthusiasm and fervour.
This year i.e 2024, will be celebrated from April 14th to April 20th, 2024. The festival’s roots go back to ancient days highlighting Assam’s agricultural heritage. The festival happens to coincide with the start of the Assamese New Year and the beginning of spring.
Besides that, the time of Bohag Bihu also gives devotees a chance to renew, refresh and communal bonding. The festival brings family and friends closer to celebrate their traditions while strengthening the social bond with the community.
The day is all about traditional Assamese folk songs. People energetically dance by taking the centre stage. The melodious tunes of the pepa create an aura that is filled with heritage and communal love.
Also, people wear traditional clothes called as Asomiya Gohona. Ladies like to adorn Mekhala as a lower garment and a Chadar to cover their chest. They pair it with Assamese jewellery and flowers. The earrings worn by them are Jangphai, Thuriya, Keru and Lokaparo. Bracelets include Gamkharu and Muthi Kharu.
Cattle are thanked and worshipped for their efforts and contribution to farming. People gather their cattle and cleanse them with black gram and turmeric paste. They also feed them with vegetables as a token of appreciation.
