Elon Musk announces that new users on X platform will be required to pay for posting

New Delhi, April 16 (IANS) In a recent announcement, Elon Musk revealed that new users on the social platform X may soon have to pay a small fee for posting content. Musk stated that this measure is necessary to combat the influx of bots that are plaguing the platform.

In response to a user query, Musk explained, “Current AI (and troll farms) can pass ‘are you a bot’ with ease.” He emphasized that the proliferation of fake accounts not only hampers user experience but also leads to the depletion of available usernames.

While this move may seem restrictive, Musk clarified that this fee will only apply to new users. After three months, they will gain access to write actions for free. Interestingly, this is not the first time X has introduced charges for new accounts.

Last year, the platform implemented a $1 per year fee for new unverified users in certain regions. More recently, X embarked on a massive clean-up operation to eliminate spam accounts, resulting in some users losing followers.

Musk assured users that the ongoing purge is targeting bots and trolls to improve the overall quality of interactions on the platform. However, X has not disclosed the exact number of bots present on the platform at present.
