A new device made of paper for on-the-spot glucose testing with a smartphone

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur have created a new low-cost paper-based device that connects to smartphones for on-spot detection of glucose levels. The device uses biodegradable paper that changes color based on glucose levels. It is designed to be affordable and eco-friendly.

The device, costing only around Rs. 10 in the lab, provides quick and personalized results when connected to a smartphone. It can be even cheaper during mass production, at Rs 5. This innovation eliminates the need for technical laboratory settings and offers a convenient solution for glucose testing.

Unlike previous paper-based devices that required specific light conditions to function, this new device utilizes machine learning to work with all smartphones under various lighting conditions. This feature ensures seamless transmission of information for accurate results.

Ankur Gupta, Associate Professor at IIT Jodhpur, mentioned that the smartphone integration could enable remote monitoring, data storage, and sharing of results, benefiting healthcare professionals and researchers. The device’s adaptability for uric acid screening and diagnostic analysis of other diseases showcases its potential for healthcare applications.

The research on this device has been published in the journal ACS Publications, highlighting its reliability and accuracy for initial disease screening at the user end. By incorporating machine learning techniques, the platform aims to improve healthcare screening and diagnosis processes.
