Amarinder Singh leaving Congress but not joining BJP

Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said that he would be leaving the Congress party but would not join BJP. He said that he would resign and would not stay at the party. 

He further added, “I will not be treated in this humiliating manner. I will not take such insults. My principles and beliefs do not allow him to stay in the Congress.”

Amarinder Singh recently resigned as a CM of Punjab over a ruckus between him and Navjot Singh Sidhu. He was replaced by Charanjeet Singh Channi. Yesterday he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah after which there were speculations of him joining BJP.

Mr. Singh also met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval today morning, where he said that he met Ajit Doval to talk about the security situation in the sensitive border State.

He also highlighted the threat to national security if there is misgovernance in border states like Punjab. He said it would allow creating trouble in the State and the country to Pakistan.

Amarinder Singh also said that his visit to Delhi was to just collect his things from Kapurthala House which is the official home for the Punjab Chief Minister in Delhi and hand over the house to his successor, Mr. Singh.

Mr. Singh also said that Senior Congressmen are the thinkers but they are being sidelined. He condemned the attack on former Union Minister Kapil Sibal’s residence by Youth Congress workers and said that choosing to express views that were not palatable to the party leadership.

Congress’s AICC Treasurer Pawan Bansal said that Capt. Amarinder Singh’s assertion that he had been humiliated is not correct. The fact is that most of the 74 Congress MLAs did not want him as CM, yet the party continued with him and only repeatedly requested that he should respect party MLAs’ sentiments regarding Bargari sacrilege, electricity costs, and sand mafia. He failed to act. It was only then that he was asked to resign. It would be interesting to see the impact of Amarinder Singh leaving Congress on upcoming Punjab election.
