Analysis: Is New Zealand's coronavirus outbreak as 'terrible' as Trump says?

Referring to some nations now seeing a brand new wave of coronavirus circumstances, Trump mentioned “they had been holding up names of nations and now they’re saying ‘whoops’.”

“Even New Zealand, did you see what is going on on in New Zealand? ‘They beat it, they beat it.’ It was like entrance web page, they beat it, as a result of they wished to indicate me one thing,” he added. “The issue is, massive surge in New Zealand … it is horrible.”

New Zealand reported 9 new circumstances on Monday. The US reported tens of hundreds. Just one state, Vermont, has fewer complete circumstances than New Zealand, and will but overtake it given the comparative stage of the 2 nations’ outbreaks.
Whereas a brand new wave of circumstances has caused some alarm in New Zealand, after the nation went over 100 days with none group infections, it has already been largely introduced beneath management.

However Trump’s feedback do spotlight the typically jarring disconnect between how governments reply to outbreaks, and the way these responses are lined within the media, and the severity of the scenario in these nations.

Simply going by headlines, the latest scenario in Asia-Pacific might look fairly dire. New Zealand has postponed its election and ramped up restrictions on day by day life. Australia has locked components of the nation down and even declared a “state of disaster” in one state. South Korea is ordering thousands of new tests and imposing social distancing measures. Hong Kong has launched its strongest restrictions but.
In the meantime, in Europe, persons are going on holiday. Throughout the UK, persons are gathering on seashores and in parks, whereas England is making ready to ship youngsters again to school. Within the US, focus is more and more shifting to November’s election, which there isn’t any probability of suspending, and states are increasingly reopening and going again to regular.
The statistics don’t assist this bizarro world scenario. The US is the worst-hit nation globally, with 2 million extra coronavirus circumstances than the second-worst, Brazil, and even that may not be the true tally, as testing remains patchy. The UK is the second worst-hit nation in Europe, simply barely behind Spain.
In Asia, solely India makes it into the highest 10, in response to a tally of circumstances by Johns Hopkins University, whereas not one of the 4 locations the place latest waves have attracted a lot media protection even break the highest 60.

That is to not reduce the brand new outbreaks in New Zealand, Australia, South Korea or Hong Kong — the virus isn’t any much less lethal in these locations, and the necessity to get it beneath management stays as pertinent as ever.

The truth that the virus was capable of return in nations that had largely stamped it out is deeply concerning, suggesting that we might not be capable to totally loosen up restrictions for months and even years to return. However there’s a mannequin for responding to such waves, and its the one getting used throughout a lot of Asia-Pacific: stamp out group infections by lockdowns, masks carrying and social distancing, regularly carry controls as infections go down, and reintroduce them in the event that they go up once more.

In response to Trump’s feedback, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern mentioned Tuesday that she did not see any actual comparability between New Zealand’s present cluster and the tens of hundreds of circumstances which might be reported day by day within the US.

“New Zealand’s 9 circumstances in a day doesn’t evaluate to the US’ tens of hundreds, and in reality doesn’t evaluate to most nations on this planet. I am not involved about individuals misinterpreting our standing,” mentioned Ardern.

The swift motion taken by many Asia-Pacific governments in response to the brand new wave of circumstances, whereas maybe giving a skewed impression of how drastic the scenario is, is exactly how you can get issues again beneath management. And whereas going from zero to some dozen circumstances might typically appear to be a “massive surge,” as Trump described New Zealand’s newest outbreak, for many individuals, it stays far preferable to staying constant at tens of hundreds of day by day infections.
