The festival goes by many names such as Prabhodini Ekadashi, Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Devutthana Ekadashi. Mouth-watering food is prepared while devotees worship Lord Vishnu. It is observed on the 11 lunar day of the Kartik Month in Shukla Paksha. As per Hindu mythology, this is regarded as the holiest month in the Hindu calendar.
The term ‘Uthani’ means “to wake up Lord Vishnu”, many devotees like to observe fast while praising the Lord Vishnu. The fast is later broken in the Parana i.e phase that comes after the sunrise on the next day. This fast is considered the longest fast in the Hindu culture.
According to Vedic scriptures, the day marks the ending of the Chaturmas period, a time which is considered bad for anything such as engagements, marriage and starting a new business to name a few.
The period of Chaturmas is the time when Lord Vishnu goes into a deep sleep called Yoga Nidra. Right after killing the demon Sankhayan, he stole the Vedas. It is said that certain ceremonies are conducted called as ‘Awakening of Lord Vishnu’ to awaken the god.
On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped to seek his blessing, abundance and prosperity. Delicious food is made like spinach, white radish, sweet potatoes and water chestnut. Additionally, the idol of Lord Vishnu is kept under Channi with a diya.
