EA to lay off approximately 670 employees in video game sector

Popular video gaming company EA (Electronic Arts) is laying off 5 per cent of its workforce, or nearly 670 employees, as part of a move to streamline operations and deliver better gaming experiences. The company’s CEO Andrew Wilson stated that the job cuts will support strategic priorities and growth initiatives.

According to Wilson, EA had about 13,400 employees as of 2023, and the layoffs are part of an effort to optimize the company’s global real estate footprint. The move also includes sunsetting games and moving away from development of future licensed IP that is not expected to be successful in the changing industry.

Wilson emphasized the importance of focusing on projects that align with the company’s strategy, and restructuring teams to drive greater focus across its portfolio. Last year, EA had laid off around 6 per cent of its workforce amidst global economic uncertainties, and the recent layoffs are in line with the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations.

In a similar move, Sony recently announced plans to lay off about 900 employees in its PlayStation division, or 8 per cent of its workforce. This trend of job cuts in the gaming industry highlights the pressure companies are under to adapt to changes in the market and deliver more innovative gaming experiences to fans worldwide.
