Elderly Woman Receives Hip Revision Surgery at KGMU

Lucknow, March 28 (IANS) – Doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) have accomplished a successful hip revision surgery on an 85-year-old woman. The patient underwent a surgery on her left hip 35 years ago, and the old plate needed to be replaced.

Professor Narendra Singh Kushwaha, from the department of orthopaedic surgery at KGMU, explained, “These days hexagonal screwdrivers are used to fix or remove a plate inserted in the bone during hip replacement. We have only read in books about simple screws used for hip replacement.”

The patient faced complications due to the use of older technology in her previous surgery, leading to bone growth over the plate. Prof Kushwaha mentioned, “We had to get simple screwdrivers from the market to remove the wainwright osteotomy plate provided to her broken hip joint 35 years ago during her first hip replacement surgery.”

The woman, who had been turned away by other hospitals due to the complications, was finally operated on at KGMU. The surgery was conducted five days ago, and the patient is now able to walk on her own. She will soon be discharged from the hospital, according to the doctor.
