However, her posts received a massive backlash, and Gill had to seek legal respite, which involved substantial legal expenses to the tune of $300,000, and she had to take recourse to crowdfund her legal battle.

X, in a statement, said that the social media platform is proud to defend the Indian-origin doctor who had received the brickbats from the medical fraternity, which has the tacit support of the Canadian Government for speaking out her mind and her freedom of speech was being threatened.

Elon Musk heard about the crowdfunding campaign to pay the judgment by Gill and decided to help.

Kulvinder Kaur Gill is an Indian-origin pediatrician in Ontario, Canada, and is an ardent supporter of informed voluntary consent without any restriction or pressure, as per the information furnished on the crowdfunding website, which helped Gill to raise funds.

Gill has been practicing in Toronto for the last 10 years and holds postgraduate training in pediatrics, allergy, and immunology.

Gill said in an interview earlier in March,

“I practice in communities that are predominantly marginalized populations. A larger section of the community is working class, poor immigrants.”

When the lockdown was enforced in Canada in 2020, Gill was one of the few people who spoke against the COVID measures and contended that the lockdown caused immense hardships and was counterproductive.

However, her posts were followed by a massive backlash.

On Sunday, X News said in a post that Dr. Gill was subject to harassment by the media as well as the earlier Twitter management for her views on Canadian and Ontario governments’ COVID lockdown efforts and vaccination mandates.

Gill also had to endure investigations and disciplinary proceedings by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario and was issued cautions, which remained on her permanent public record.
