Fact check: At his golf club, Trump nonsensically accuses Democrats of election ‘cheating’

Published

on

Trump's coronavirus briefings are back. So is the dishonesty

Trump additionally launched a brand new, wildly inaccurate declare: an allegation that Democrats are dishonest within the election through their negotiations with Republicans over a brand new coronavirus aid invoice.

After speaking about what he stated was the danger of international nations utilizing mail-in ballots to cheat within the election — which, as standard, he vastly overstated — Trump accused the Democrats of doing their very own election dishonest.

“The Democrats are dishonest on the election. As a result of that is precisely what they’re doing. For those who take a look at what they’re doing even with these negotiations. That is an affect, and an unfair affect, on an election,” he stated.

Information First: That is nonsense. Taking part in a legislative negotiation is solely not dishonest in an election; Trump didn’t even try to elucidate his allegation.

As well as, it’s not as if Democrats are conspiring to hurt the Trump-era economic system earlier than Election Day: The Democratic-controlled Home of Representatives has already passed its personal aid invoice, and Senate Democrats are proposing to spend more money than the White Home and Senate Republicans are proposing to spend.

Pre-existing circumstances

Trump promised that he can be issuing an govt order to require well being insurers to “cowl all pre-existing circumstances for all clients.”

He then added, “This has by no means been performed earlier than.”

Information First: That is extremely deceptive. It is true that earlier presidents haven’t tried to make use of an govt order to drive well being insurers to cowl folks with pre-existing circumstances — however sturdy protections for folks with pre-existing circumstances have been signed into legislation by President Barack Obama through laws: the Reasonably priced Care Act, also called Obamacare. Trump is at present backing a Republican lawsuit looking for to get the Reasonably priced Care Act voided as unconstitutional.

We can’t get into the query of the legality of a presidential try to make use of an govt order, reasonably than a legislation, to order well being insurers to create such protections.

The federal well being division explains on its website, Obamacare exempted sure “grandfathered” particular person insurance coverage from its guidelines on masking folks with pre-existing circumstances — so maybe, if Trump goes to situation an order with no exemptions in any respect, he could make an argument that his plan is unprecedented.

Nonetheless, although, his Friday declare created the impression that he was going to be the pioneer of protections for folks with pre-existing circumstances. That’s not true in any respect.

Trump additionally repeated quite a few false claims he has made earlier than, together with his claims that:

  • The coronavirus is “disappearing” (It’s plainly not; the US had reported greater than 42,000 new circumstances on Friday earlier than Trump started his information convention)
  • Prescription drug prices declined final yr for the primary time in 51 years (The decline, of 0.7%, occurred two years in the past; by the identical measure, costs rose 3% final yr)
  • More testing leads to more cases (Testing does not create circumstances, merely exhibits them, and checks are a pandemic-fighting software that ought to assist cut back circumstances)
  • International nations can easily forge mail-in ballots (Consultants say that is merely not true as a result of of varied poll safety measures)
  • China is paying the fee of his tariffs on imported Chinese language merchandise (Examine after examine has proven Individuals pay the tariffs)
  • China was having its worst year economically in 67 years previous to the pandemic (Its 2019 progress was the bottom in 29 years)
  • Trump has all the time been strongly in favor of protecting pre-existing conditions (He has repeatedly backed Republican payments that will have considerably weakened these protections in Obamacare)
