New Delhi, March 28 (IANS) Top corporate executive turned acclaimed author and public intellectual, Gurcharan Das, launched his book ‘The Dilemma Of An Indian Liberal’ (Speaking Tiger) on Wednesday, shedding light on the forgotten ethos of liberalism.

Das emphasized the importance of fraternity, often overshadowed by the focus on liberty. He recounted his journey from socialist values to becoming a libertarian after an encounter with the inefficiencies of the Licence Raj during a flu epidemic.

Highlighting the shift towards economic freedom in 1991, Das criticized the lack of public engagement in selling reforms, unlike leaders such as Deng Xiaoping and Margaret Thatcher. He urged for a push towards industrial revolution by increasing manufacturing and exports.

Despite initial optimism with Modi’s promise of ‘Minimum government, maximum governance’, Das expressed disappointment in the flawed execution of demonetization. However, he believes that the current government holds the key to necessary reforms for India’s progress.

Reminiscing the success of systematic reforms under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao’s ‘Thursday Committee’, Das underlined the need for effective communication and public buy-in for successful reforms. He pointed out the potential for an industrial revolution with improved infrastructure in the present scenario.
