However, in West Bengal and Odisha Vijayadashami is more popular. Bengalis immerse the idols of Maa Durga into holy water bodies as a part of performing Durga Visarjan. Across the country, Ram Lila is organized in a mass. People gather to watch Ravan in flames.

Vijayadashami is celebrated on the following day of Maha Navami. In 2023, the celebration of Dussehra is set to occur on October 24, 2023 Tuesday. As per the Hindu lunar calendar, Dussehra is celebrated during the month of Ashwin, on the Shukla Paksha.

History and significance

After Shardiya Navratri, or the day following Maha Navami as per the Hindu lunar calendar, during the month of Ashwin, the festival is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha. This day is a symbol of victory of good over evil.

As per Hindu Mythology, two important events took place on this day. Lord Rama, the Incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Treta Yuga killed Ravana, the king of Lanka. Also, Goddess Durga defeated Mahishasura finally on the tenth day of their fierce battle.

The festival falls Twenty days before the celebration of Diwali or Laxmi Puja. Hence, Vijayadashami marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations. Dussehra teaches the world the power of light and good over darkness and evil, respectively. During these days, people worship God for good health and prosperity.

In the northern parts of the country, the celebration of Karwa Chauth or Karaka Chaturthi is prevalent. Married Hindu women observe a nirjala vrat (fasting with no water or solids) from dawn until the moon rises. This day is important as it is observed for the prosperity, good health, and long lives of their husband.

Only after offering Arghya to the Moon, women break their fast by drinking water and eating food. The Arghya is offered with Karva, an earthen pot. Traditionally in recent times, the fast is observed by soon-to-be-married and married women. As per the Hindu calendar, the celebration of Karwa Chauth occurs on Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. This year in 2023, the Karwa Chauth celebration will be done on November 1, Sunday. However, as per Drik Panchang, the puja muhurat of the Karwa Chauth is from 5:36 p.m. to 6:54 p.m. The moon rise time on the karwa chauth day is at 8:15 p.m. Furthermore, the time of vrat is from 6:33 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Tales

Various stories are associated with the celebration of Karwa Chauth. The celebration is traced back to Karva Devi. She, as Savitri asked Lord Yama, the god of death to return her dead husband. As per another story, this day is celebrated because when Arjun was meditating at the Nilgiris, Draupadi asked for Lord Krishna’s help in worry. Lord Krishna asked Draupadi to keep fast for Arjun like Lord Shiva, and Goddess Parvati did.
